scouse
   ‘Scouse’ is an eighteenth-century word from ‘lobscouse’, a sailors’ meal of meat and vegetables similar to Irish stew. Hence, ‘lobscouser’ was the name used for a sailor and ‘scouser’ became the term for a person from Liverpool, a major port where the stew was popular. ‘Scouse’ has come to refer fairly recently (probably since the Second World War) to the flat, adenoidal working-class speech of the city, which combines elements of Lancashire with English dialects from Ireland and, to a lesser extent, Wales. Probably the most famous users of scouse were the Beatles, though the Mersey Poets used it to literary effect.
